White Wash: Josh returns to the podium

The seventh and eighth rounds of the Bernie Ecclestone and Lewis Hamilton-endorsed Formula Kart Stars series moved to the picturesque Glan Y Gors circuit in North Wales, providing an appropriately dramatic backdrop for White’s superb return to form.  Channel Five’s Fifth Gear programme was also present to film the action.

Saturday morning’s qualifying session saw Josh post an encouraging fifth-fastest time and therefore earn a third row starting position on the grid for each of his two heats. In these the Welcome to Yorkshire ambassador claimed a brace of 4th-place finishes, putting him on P4 for the start of the points-scoring final.

A close race followed with the top six drivers barely separated by a tenth of a second in terms of pace. White crossed the line in a confidence-boosting 4th place again, feeling that he could improve in Sunday’s corresponding fixture.

With the weather also taking a rare turn for the better, the RL Racing Department driver telegraphed his intent in timed qualifying when he pipped his team-mate Sam Marsh to pole position by two one-hundredths of a second. Now clearly fired-up, he duly converted his start-line advantage into back-to-back victories in the subsequent two heats.

Having secured pole position for the final, Josh faced twenty two laps of fierce competition from the quality field and, not least, Marsh. From the outset, he pushed White hard and soon wrested the lead from him. Keeping a cool head, Josh stuck to his team-mate’s rear bumper and the pair worked with each other to go two seconds clear of the chasing pack.

Aware that he was faster, Josh picked his moment and retook the advantage. Using his superior speed and with a clear track in front of him, White edged clear of Marsh and reeled out the remaining laps to win comfortably.

“It was a White-wash!” said his delighted team owner, Steve Armstrong. “Josh was in a class of his own. He was on top from timed qualifying to the chequered flag in the final. Brilliant!”

White’s relief and elation was clearly evident: “It’s fantastic to be back on the top step of the podium. I’m really, really pleased because it’s been such a difficult first half of the

season for me due to a series of mechanical problems and sheer bad luck. I can’t wait to get back out there and this win has come at the perfect time, just a week before I fly to Sweden for the third round of the European Rotax championship.”

He added: “I’d like to thank Steve and everyone in the RL Racing Department team who worked hard to help me, Welcome to Yorkshire for their support and Carolynn Hoy of Formula Kart Stars, who is always helpful and runs a great championship.”
