Scorton teenager Max Coates was invited to take part in a BTCC Superstar Kart race at Daytona Milton Keynes as part of the British Touring Car penultimate round at Silverstone.
Racing the likes of Frank Wrathall, Rob Austin, Adam Morgan, Dave Newsham and Lea Wood, Max took the opportunity to battle against his idols in the BTCC paddock. After a tough race Max came back from a first lap incident to narrowly beat Wrathall by 0.367 seconds at the flag. His fastest lap of the race was 9 tenths faster than the second fastest driver.
Max had been racing in the Ginetta GT Supercup in a RedBrick Racing Ginetta G50. Taking wins at Brands Hatch, Donington and Croft as well as podiums at Thruxton whilst racing in front of up to 40,000 fans and millions watching the live ITV4 footage Coates has had a fantastic season to date. Budget issues forced him out of the second half of the season; however a return to racing is expected in 2013 and potentially at Brands Hatch on the 21st October.
Max said “This year has been full of ups and downs, taking race wins has been amazing but missing meetings due to a lack of funding has been soul destroying. We are close to making the season finale at Brands Hatch but need to find a little bit more budget to race.”
